Fumed silica is a finely divided amorphous silicon dioxide (SiO2) with a very large surface area. Fumed silica is used as a rheological additive
in aqueous, solvent-based and 100% systems in coatings
, adhesives and sealants
or for oil for the production of greases
as well as for oily cosmetics
and care products
. In addition, fumed silica is used as an anti-caking agent for powders, also in food industry
(E 551) and in pharmaceuticals. Special applications include dye-receptive layers for high-quality inkjet printing.
are untreated hydrophilic silicas, which are offered with different surfaces and are also available in food and pharmaceutical grades. The hydrophilic silicas are mainly used in non-polar systems as rheological additives
or as anti-caking agents. Surface-modified fumed silicas are also available, which are more effective in polar systems than the untreated ones. However, CAB-O-SIL®
can also be used to stabilise emulsions without the addition of surfactants (pickering emulsions).
